Prof. Abdullahi Abdu Zuru, Chairman of the Board of the Electoral Institute (BEI), delivered the opening remarks today at the Annual Prof. Abubakar Momoh Memorial Lecture, held at the Electoral Institute (TEI) Auditorium in Abuja.
Prof. Zuru represented the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, who couldn't attend due to other commitments. He conveyed Prof. Yakubu’s greetings and best wishes for the event's success. He also urged everyone to continue praying for the late Prof. Abubakar Momoh, in whose memory the lecture is held.
The theme of this year’s lecture is “Achieving Professionalism among Election Personnel through Effective Training in Preparation for Edo and Ondo Off Cycle Governorship Elections.” Prof. Zuru emphasized the importance of training election staff to ensure they are knowledgeable, skilled, and professional. This, he said, is crucial for fair and credible elections.
Dr. Kole Shettima, a pro-democracy activist and Africa Director of the MacArthur Foundation, was the guest lecturer. Dr. Shettima’s work in promoting democracy has made significant impacts in Nigeria and Africa.
Prof. Zuru stressed that professional and ethical conduct by election officials builds public trust in the electoral process. He outlined key principles for election officials, including integrity, impartiality, transparency, and respect for all voters.
He thanked the INEC Chairman, the BEI Board, and the TEI team for organizing the event. He officially declared the lecture open, aiming to enhance the professionalism of Nigeria’s election personnel and strengthen the country's democratic processes.
